One random night, my father called me to sit beside him. The fan above creaked slowly, casting a soft breeze across our faces. The room was awkwardly silent. I thought he was about to scold me—maybe for my recent behavior. I had grown distant, unsocial, withdrawn. But instead, he spoke calmly and told me a story I’ll never forget.

He was the brightest student in school until 8th grade. Then, in 9th, he picked up a habit—cricket. He started bunking classes, playing all day, enjoying life. But that joy came at a cost. His grades fell, and for three years—9th, 10th, and 11th—he scored poorly. People mocked him, calling him dumb, saying he had a low IQ. He didn’t argue. He stayed quiet.

They were the days of Becom first year. One day, while playing cricket, he overheard his classmates talking about someone named Pankaj—the class topper, unbeatable. Casually, my father said, “I can beat him.” Everyone laughed. They mocked him again. But this time, their laughter lit a fire.

He began studying—not like a regular student, but like a man on a mission. He created a strict schedule from 6 a.m. to 3 a.m., with only a short break at noon. He shut out the world—black curtains, locked windows, and only a candle to light his notes. Sunlight made him sleepy, so he studied in the dark. He practiced tirelessly, writing with red, green, and dark pens on newspapers to improve speed.

And it paid off. He topped the class. The same teachers who once mocked him praised him. The same classmates who laughed now asked for his notes.

That story changed me.

When I feel tired while studying, I poke my leg with a pen. It hurts—but it wakes me up. I used to fail math. Now I score 60s and 80s. From 2 marks to 80, that’s not just progress. That’s purpose.
